A Day on the Hill at the Bigger's Farm

We are blessed with so many wonderful friends. I can't say enough about the love and support we have gotten since bringing Pierson and Maylin home and even before that! A couple of those friends are Kate and Andy and Kate's wonderful parents Jim and Stephanie. A few weeks ago (I am a little behind) We were invited to "the Hill" aka Jim and Stephanie's house to see their new bunnies! Of course we couldn't pass that opportunity up so off we went to pet the rabbits. We had no idea the adventure we were in for. What a great afternoon!

Stephanie was getting the first bunny out. Maylin was sure that she was going to be able to hold them by herself. I assured her she couldn't! :)

If this doesn't warm your heart, you must not have one! :)

Stephanie picked a couple small cucumbers from her "Better Homes and Gardens" garden (really it is that gorgeous!) to feed the bunnies. They licked them a couple of times but I am not sure they ate. I think the energy of the kids made them a bit nervous.

Kate helped Maylin feed.

Stephanie helping Pierson... Before long it was time to put the bunnies up and go check out the rest of "The Hill".

This is my "Stinkerbell" letting the roosters know who was in charge around here!

Pierson picking fresh black berries! Fortunately for Mommy he likes to share! :)

Stephanie got a few different chickens out for the kids to pet. I was amazed at how tame they were. Maylin wasn't sure about petting them, but Pierson was all about them!

He even got in the coup and helped pick up eggs. He only broke one. The concept of putting them down gently into the metal bowl was lost on him. If he isn't the cutest farmer though, I don't know who is!

Maylin was sure she was going to be able to wrangle the chickens all by herself. Thanks to Kate's quick feet she didn't get a chance to try. As I called to stop her she turned confidently, looked at me, put her hand up, and said, "It's OK Mommy." and proceeded to try to open the gate! Again, she is my "Stinkerbell"!!! :)

Even chickens can have enough of a 4 and 5 year old! So it was off to the barn (which Jim and Stephanie bought, tore down, moved and reassembled on their "hill". It is a beautiful place!
Maylin started crawling on the lawn mower so Andy took her for a ride! No blades on of course.
Andy said he had to wrestle her for the controls, and is amazingly strong! Kind of makes me chuckle. A big guy like Andy fighting a 34 pound little girl for power!

And of course Pierson had to have a turn so Stephanie took him! I am not sure who had more fun Pierson or Stephanie! I had fun just watching them!

And of course when they got back Maylin pulled her famous "one more time" quote. So off they went again! Stephanie is a great sport!

As we were walking back to the house the kids stopped to pet the horses. Good thing the electric fence was off!

Back at the house Andy gave the kids a couple of action figures including Darth Tater! No, I didn't misspell that. It is actually a Mr. Potato head dressed like Darth Vader! Thanks Andy that has been hours of entertainment!

Pierson found Mr. Jim's hat! Then we were served with caked and ice cream!!! I can't think of a better way to top off an afternoon on the farm!

Before we left Stephanie loaded us up with corn, potatoes, and tomatoes! YUMMY! Thanks again! We had so much fun!

That evening at Grandma's house we shucked the corn and ate it for dinner!!! It was delicious!!!

God truly has blessed us with wonderful friends!

4th of July Celebrations

Our First attempt to have 4th of July Celebrations was on July 3rd. I was working our craft booth with my cousin Monica while the rest of my family was making their way into the park in Harrisburg to enjoy the festivities. We were excited about the kids enjoying their first 4th of July as America residents. However Maylin apparently started to not feel well and as they were on the path in to the park she vomited all over Adam who was carrying her. :( Poor little thing. Needless to say Adam took her home and cleaned her up to let her sleep off her upset belly.
July 3rd was a wash for our "first 4th family celebration".

Pierson still enjoyed the evening getting a balloon and watching the fireworks. He was kind enough to get a balloon for his sick little sister too. Isn't he sweet!

Attempt number two on the actual 4th of July.

Now that we were all feeling better we could really enjoy the festivities! Pierson had been upset that he didn't get to ride any rides the night before. Judging by the time expression on his face above I the wait was worth it.

Maylin wasn't exactly sure about the ride at first but she ended up really enjoying it!

Of course we had to ride the ponies. Ever since then Pierson has asked to ride Mom's horses... They are 34 and about 39 years old... I don't think they want to be ridden anymore but I can't get Pierson to really understand that. I have tried to explain that we might break their backs if we got on them but he just says, "Mommy it's OK, Horses stwong!"

Maylin was excited to ride the ponies but definitely didn't want Daddy to leave her side. She got to pick the pony she wanted because she was first in line. She immediately went to this cute little grey one.

They absolutely loved "driving these race cars! Watch out Dale Jr. Here come my speed lovers.

Of course bouncy things are some of the favorite things . Maylin did this one about 5 times before she was content enough to move on.

Catching some air! I love this little boys enthusiasm for life!

They both wanted to ride the swings. Contrary to this picture they both thoroughly enjoyed them. It was hard to get a good picture because it was dark and they were moving pretty fast.

What is a festival without picking up ducks from the water? They Pierson won a stuffed turtle and Maylin won a stuffed duck.

Now that we were out of tickets it was time to go get in our places to watch the fireworks. Pierson was so excited for Maylin to be able to see them. Even though he told me that they had seen fireworks before. (no doubt! They lived in the place they were invented!) Thanks to Daddy and and our friend Brandon these tired little legs got one more ride.

Pierson and Maylin brought their own little chairs to sit back and enjoy the show! At first they sat so still. It seemed that they were going to watch the whole show without moving.... but that didn't last long. After about 5 minutes they were up and moving around not even paying attention. Until the finale which caught their attention!

What better way to finish of 4th of July festivities than with a funnel cake?! Pierson thought this was a great idea. Especially the powdered sugar part! I don't think he even noticed that he was being watched until...

I called his name. I love the look I got. He couldn't even be bothered to lift his head... just his eyes. And I really love the fact that he was holding the rest of the funnel cake in his hand. I guess we know which part he liked the best. :)
PS. Happy Birthday to Grandpa Shultz who's birthday is July 4th! We can't wait to come up to Ohio to visit soon!

Our Second to Last Night in Taipei

OK. So this is only three months late... better late than never. Our blog is serving as a life book for the kids so I didn't want to leave this out. Don't ask me why it took me so long to post this. I don't have any idea. I just didn't know how to put it all into words. I still don't but I figure if I still don't I never will.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Our second to last night in our children's homeland was a joyous night and one that I will cherish forever. It was getting close to being the last time that our children would be in a place where everyone understood them and they understood the people around them. It nearing the last night we would be surrounded by the culture they were born in, the smells they were used to, and the life they had known. It was tearing my heart out. I wanted to be able to keep them there forever (even though I was ready to come home to my culture, my smells and my life!). It is a life lesson I will never forget. We in America tend to think that our way is the best way. While I personally like our way (for the most part) I have realized over my life and travels that maybe our way is best for us because that is what we are used to and what we have come to think of as normal. We aren't accustomed to realizing that other ways of life are normal and acceptable. We are a nation that keeps up with the jonses and anyone who doesn't is considered less-than or unusual. We aren't a nation that embarrasses other cultures and ways of life. For this reason it makes me sad to bring our children into my culture. I don't ever want them to think that the culture they were brought up in is wrong or strange. I want them to always know and appreciate where they came from! With that said here are some snap shots from a wonderful Christ filled night in Taipei. You have to read the end to fully appreciate it all.

We decided to take the kids to the night market. Instead of trying to shop there we just decided we would hit the "arcade" area. I use the word "arcade" loosely because it was really just chaos. There were little things to ride, machines with the arm thingies that let you try to pick up a stuffed animal (no one ever wins those things) and there were food vendors. There was so much going on in this open air building it was a bit overwhelming. Luckily everything there that they wanted to play on was less than an American penny so we let them go a little wild!

Maylin was having fun riding this little train in that incredibly tight circle. It almost made me sick watching her. Pierson and Daddy are in the background on another train. As soon as one ride was over (and occasionally before it was over) they were jumping off and taking off to something else. We were definitely playing man-on-man. Between the sights, smells, and quick feet of these two, it wasn't too long before I was wiped out.

A close up of Pierson on the train.

Riding in a little car. Maylin wanted Daddy to get in the back seat with her... I don' think he fit. Pierson was playing the chauffeur.

Then it was off to the basketball game. I don't think they even made it close to the net, but they sure were having fun!

They had to stand on the game so they could get it over the first net. They were so cute.

Maylin was desperately trying to get some little animal out of this machine. Has anyone ever won anything out of these. No wonder it was so cheap to play. They never have to replenish the prizes!

Pierson came a little closer to winning but of course failed because everyone does at these games! :) He actually put thought into where his "arm" should drop. Maylin just made it go helter-skelter and hit the button. As we have learned more and more this fits her personality 100%.

There were also these strange little animals that you sat in, dropped the equivalent of a penny in, and drove around the place. It was kind of like bumper cars with no boundaries! Slightly scary, slightly dangerous, yet a lot of fun! The penny lasted about 5 minutes before the thing stopped. Then you just pushed them back to their places. Very unusual. I don't know what kept people from driving them home except for the crazy traffic!

Maylin wanted a little help from Daddy... He didn't really fit very well but he sure tried. Somehow I didn't get a good picture of the one that Pierson was on. It was interesting to say the least. It had fake fur that was several inches long. It was like a giant, brown, shaggy... dog? It was pretty dirty and I don't even want to think about what was living in that fur, but that is the one Pierson wanted so that is what he got. Thank Heaven for wipes!

Here they are in a "helicopter". Pierson clearly didn't want his sister to wreck them. He did a pretty good job of keeping her hands of the controls. And amazingly enough she let him for a while and then while it was moving she jumped out and was on to the next ride.

After we were out of "pennies" we were all thirsty. We found a vendor that looked 'not sketchy' and ordered REAL kiwi slushies. They were amazing! They literally took about 5 kiwi and a little bit of ice and shaved them into the best slushy I have ever consumed! Clearly Pierson was enjoying his!

Maylin and Daddy enjoying their slushies while we listened to the live music.
Mommy and Pierson. Looking at these are making my mouth water!
It was a wonderful night full of great memories. It still feels like it was yesterday, except for the fact that I can't really remember not knowing Pierson and Maylin. It feels like they have always been a part of our lives. And how easily I forget that we had virtually no means of communicating with them other than hand gestures.
Maylin was dancing and singing to the beat. Her fullness of life shines through continually. You can see Daddy dancing with Pierson in the background. I know it doesn't look like dancing, but that is what they were doing. :)
A STORY NOT TO MISS!!!
Funny thing was we were all enjoying the beat of the music. It was catchy even though the words were all in Mandarin. However, all of the sudden we hear "Yes Lord, Yes Lord, Yes, Yes Lord, Amen". There was a reason the music seemed so catchy. They were singing praise songs in Mandarin with an occasional English phrase thrown in. Another song we figured out they were singing was "O Happy Day" (the new contemporary version of it). It was amazing. Here were are in a culture where Christianity is by far the religious minority, listening to praise music that our kids could understand! We danced and videotaped. Apparently I didn't get any pictures but we videoed a lot of it. The group was obviously a praise band from a local church. As we were getting ready to leave the pastor of the group got up and started preaching and then gave an invitation to come forward to commit their lives to Christ (as best as we could tell that was what was going on). People were going forward and most importantly our kids eyes were glued to the whole thing. This was a gift from God greater than we could have ever imagined. We weren't sure if our kids had ever been exposed to Jesus and we knew it would be a while before they were able to understand it from us. Here we were in our children's homeland hearing the gospel preached and our kids got to hear it from their own "people." Somehow I believe this will give us a little more credibility as we 'introduce them to Jesus" in English. Currently they are carrying around their bibles a lot. But they don't call them Bibles. They call them "My Jeswus Lubes Me's." I think we are on our way to helping them discover how great our God is!

The Next Mia Hamm and David Beckham?

Thanks to great friend of Adams and Grandpa Mickey, Mr. Wayne, Pierson and Maylin have some new balls, and gloves to learn a little bit about sports. They have been doing a great job. Both of them seem to have a natural knack for dribbling a soccer ball. I was amazed at how they kept up with it the ball and didn't kick it 20 feet in front of them. They made small kicks and kept it within two to three feet in front of them. It kind of makes me think that they were exposed to soccer in Taiwan.

Maylin looked so cute playing in her dress. She cracks me up.

Pierson decided to use the soccer ball for multi-purpose sport. He would dribble it around with his feet and then pick it up to shoot for a basket! Maybe he'll be the inventor of a new sport. Why not?

Maylin also had fun carrying around the football. They both liked throwing it, but neither one of them are really 'ready' to catch the ball. Daddy ended up with the ball but every once in a while she would run back to Daddy and have him throw it again...

Pierson even used the side of his feet to change the direction of the ball. I think I need to sign them up for soccer!
Mr. Wayne also gave the kids baseball gloves and tennis balls to throw instead of the hard baseball which may have ended us up in the emergency room! :)
They have been having fun using all of the new sports equipment! Thanks to Mr. Wayne! We are having a blast!
